Just What is a Drug Rehab Center?

A drug rehab center is a place where people suffering from chemical dependency receive help for their addictions. This help may be in the form of medically assisted detox, counseling and recovery support services. Skilled counselors, often people in recovery as well as mental health and social work professionals, use behavioral and reality-oriented approaches. These include psychosocial evaluations and assessments; a variety of behavioral therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and family systems therapy; 12-step programs; educational and recreational activities; pharmacological intervention; and supportive group therapy.

During drug rehabilitation, the goal is to change the way an individual thinks and behaves in order to stop using drugs. The rehab process may begin with an inpatient program, a residential addiction treatment center that requires a person to live at the facility for a fixed length of time. During this time, the person will undergo intense treatment for his or her addiction with 24-hour supervision. Intensive treatment usually involves the use of medications, such as methadone, to assist in breaking the addiction.

In general, drug rehab centers provide a structured schedule of activities for their clients. This helps to eliminate boredom, which can lead to relapse, and allows the client to learn a new life style without the temptation of returning to drug or alcohol use. The schedule includes daily meals, therapeutic activities and counseling sessions. It also includes some downtime, although this is usually brief and supervised.
